Spaying & Neutering
What is Spaying/Neutering? Spaying (Females): Removal of ovaries and uterus. Neutering (Males): Removal of testicles (castration). Both prevent reproduction and offer health/behavioral advantages. Key Benefits Health: Prevents testicular/ovarian/uterine cancers, pyometra (uterine infection) in females, and prostate issues in males. Behavior: Reduces roaming, urine marking, and aggression; females avoid messy heat cycles. Community: Reduces stray populations. When to Do It? General: 6 to 12 months old. Timing Varies: Consult your vet; larger breeds might benefit from waiting until 12-16 months. What to Expect During Surgery: Done under general anesthesia, so no pain. Recovery: Usually 10-14 days; involves rest, restricted activity, and pain management. Personality: Core personality remains, but hormonal behaviors (marking, roaming) often decrease. Before Surgery Withhold food for about 12 hours, but allow water until a few hours before, as instructed by your vet.
